Every
Tuesday night some of the greatest singers take the
stage at Uptown/Downtown
Sports Bar and Deli located
at the corner of North Main Street and E. Court Street,
in downtown Bowling Green. Whitney Houston, Madonna and
Celine Dion, just to name a few. Okay, you got me…it
is not really the powerhouse divas but the performers
are a close resemblance.
Rebecca Richards, the founder and first original drag
queen to grace the stage at Uptown almost ten years
ago, is still lip-synching with glamorous outfits,
five-inch black leather stilettos, and the attitude
that could blow the roof top off of any arena. Rebecca
is originally from West Millgrove, a small town in
Wood County located in Ohio. Since the age of four,
she knew she would perform on stage. According to Rebecca, “It
was always something I knew I had to do.” Rebecca
started drag queen performing at Caesar’s in
Toledo, Ohio and was approached by a woman who encouraged
her to perform in Bowling Green. Rebecca thought it
would be a great opportunity for a small town to get
a dose of diversity and some big hair!

Christina Aguilera’s new single ‘Hurt’ (Club
Mix) was beating out of the speakers as the drag queens
were preparing to take the stage. All four of the performers
were fighting over the mirror to powder their noses
while digging through the pile of wigs. The entire
upstairs of Uptown is dedicated to the performers with
racks of costumes, elegant dresses, and those few naughty
pieces that are assured crowd pleasers. The setting
is a close resemblance of a great 1930s cabaret’s
dressing room covered in make-up and vintage doilies.
The divas hear their music cue and know it is time
to take the stage and give the audience an electrifying
show.
First up, Whitney Houston (MaryKay) who came all the
way from Akron, Ohio to perform. As soon as she is
announced the crowd cheers. Jayla Desmond Fox is up
next with a rendition of Madonna’s classic “Holiday” but
it was Rebecca who “Got The Party Started.” Before
strutting to the stage, Rebecca explains that it is
only seconds before the character she is portraying “pops
on.” But not too long into her performance,
party-goers lay down and covered the dance floor in
hopes to get a touch of the glitter-covered entertainer.
