Horizon Youth Theater Camps
The Horizon Youth Theatre provides an opportunity for young people ages 5 through 18 to gain valuable experience through a series of workshops offered during the summer months in Bowling Green. The workshops are held at the BGSU's Wooster Center facility, and are broken into two different sessions with each session lasting two weeks. The workshops are run and operated by current BGSU students and university alumni.
The workshop participants work on their skills in performance, scene construction, set design, original script writing, dance, auditioning, and improvisation. Through the course of the series, all of the different areas of work that are part of a play's production are practiced. Improv sessions help participants learn to think and react quickly on stage and to follow their comedic instincts. Participants work on original scripts in writing exercises and review examples of existing scripts. In scene design sessions students learn to analyze a script to design a sets that best serve the play. And, dance is taught by studying different styles from favorite musicals, and students get to perform a complete dance number in a final presentation.
Another aim of the workshops is to help the students understand the hard work that goes into a successful play's production. The workshops require the students to be responsible and accountable for themselves and their work as part of the team. And, at the end of the series of workshops a performance is given by the participants for family and friends.
