Now the station is preparing for conversion to digital
broadcasting, an emerging technology in broadcast radio.
In addition to CD-quality sound and no static, digital
broadcasting will also expand the broadcast range of
the station out to more than 100 miles, and adds the
ability to broadcast multiple streams simultaneously.
WBGU hopes to complete this significant change by 2009.
As a non-commercial station, 88.1 is free from the restrictions
of forced play lists and interrupting commercials. Instead,
the staff of enthusiastic and diverse volunteers, comprised
of students, faculty, and community members, each bring
their own unique programming to the station. University
students host most of the weekday shows with an eclectic
mix of programs, sometimes changes hourly. On the weekend,
DJs comprised of mostly community members preside over
long-standing programming in the Blues, World Music,
Latin, Folk, Country and more.
