University Film Organization

The largest event held by the UFO is the annual BGSU Film and Media Festival. Student films from a range of genres are shown at the event, along with guest speakers and other presentations. The film submissions are judged by a panel of film and telecommunications faculty, and awards are given for the best films of the weekend.

In addition to the Film and Media Festival, UFO hosts periodic "48 Hour Film Festivals," in which teams of students compete to create a short film within just two days. Teams are randomly assigned genre types, lines of dialogue, and props that must be incorporated into the film. At the end of the 48-hours, the teams' films are screened for the general public, which is always a gratifying experience for the participants following their hard weekend of filmmaking and sleep deprivation.

When the opportunity arises, UFO also hosts traveling film festivals, speakers, and workshops. Filmmakers and speakers have been brought in from all over the country to talk to students, offering advice and support. Workshops on everything from DIY filmmaking to script coverage have been put together by UFO, often times hosted by members of the organization wanting to share their own experiences and knowledge.

"I think the biggest thing people involved with UFO will gain is experience," says Meadows. "Over a period of time, that experience builds up, and it does pay off."
