BG News Summer Edition
During the standard school year the offices of the BG News can be one of the more hectic places on campus. Staff are working all hours of the day and night, computers and phones are constantly busy, and deadlines always loom just ahead. In the summer months, though, when most students have left and many campus buildings are closed, the BG News office is still open and active.
With a reduced student population on campus the paper doesn't have the standard fare of student activities, university sports and academic programs to draw it's stories from. “We do more features” said Alaina Buzas, editor of the BG News Summer Edition, about the content in the summer editions. The summer paper still carries current news about local entertainment and other events in the area. In addition, during the summer the paper regularly covers topics of interest to the many upcoming freshman students and their parents on campus for their summer orientation visit ahead of starting at BGSU in the fall.
While the school year BG News is a daily, in the summer the paper is published once weekly, on Wednesdays. The summer staff is approximately twenty students, reduced from the average 150 students who staff the paper during the regular school year. The smaller staff size creates the opportunity for students to learn new skills and handle more responsibilities as everyone pitches in and helps in different jobs to get the paper out.
