The hard work at the BG News doesn't always go unnoticed. The paper and staff have been nationally recognized numerous times for their accomplishments. The Society of Professional Journalists has named the BG News the best newspaper of the year in its region on more than one occasion. The paper has also been honored recently at the National College Media Convention, where it received one of the five “Best in Show” awards.
“Every year the change is accelerating,” says Bortel of the newspaper business. The internet is changing the idea that all journalists will work for a printed paper, and it's becoming a challenge to maintain the printed version of the paper while also developing the website. Students are online frequently throughout the day so the internet is a common way for them to get the information they need. The paper promotes its website as a source of breaking news with video to accompany the stories.
The BG News offers fresh stories and information relevant to readers across the campus and the town, and has become a part of the community’s everyday life while proving itself as a leader among college newspapers.
