Grounds for Thought

When Grounds for Thought first opened, the coffee being served was brought in from Chicago. Looking to enhance the experience for the customers, Grounds began roasting its own house brand of coffee in 1991. The Grounds for Thought Roasting Company opened on West Wooster St. and has since expanded into a stand-alone wholesaler of premium coffee. When asked about the process, Kelly admits that "what is surprising to people is how many complicated steps are involved in what ends up being a simple cup of regular black coffee."

Throughout the years, the collection of books has grown from the initial 8000 to today's collection - a staggering 160,000 books. A large portion of the books at Grounds for Thought come from the surrounding communities. People will donate, sell, or trade their old books to the store, often walking out with a few new works in the process. This turnover keeps new books consistently circulating through the store.

The Wicks family has played an active role in the cultural scene of Bowling Green, and this dedication to the arts is apparent upon entering the store. Pieces by local artists hang on the walls, many of which are for sale. "When you have an asset at your backdoor, like the art," Mrs. Wicks reasons, "you would be remiss in not exposing the community to it."

Sandy Wicks is proud of the store that she and her family have built over the last two decades. "It's just become a great meeting place for the town."
