Update: The Gamers Lounge has since closed for business.
It started with a challenge. According to the co-owners
of the Gamers Lounge, Alex Merced and Spencer Marugg,
they founded their company because they felt they needed
a challenge. Alex, currently a senior of BGSU, and Spencer,
a recent graduate, came up with the idea for their business
in November of 2005. The idea was simple: start a business
in Bowling Green where game enthusiasts can go and do
what they enjoy doing, a place where the environment
was focused on gaming, and, of course, having fun.
They began scouting for banks and applying for loans
and other finances to gather enough resources to start
the company. The original idea was to form a company
that catered to online gaming, also known as LAN
gaming.
After doing some research, they realized that their
potential audience might be much larger than just online
gamers, but could include all of the gamer culture.
Gamer culture has grown recently due to the rise in
popularity of online games such as massively multiplayer
online games (MMOs). These games allow thousands of
people to play online in the same game all at once.
The most popular computer games at the lounge include:
Counter Strike, World of Warcraft, and Battlefield
II. The gamer culture also encompasses |

collectible card games (CCGs), as well as miniature
figure gaming. Popular card games include: Magic: The
Gathering, Universal Fighting System (UFS), and Legend
of the Five Rings (L5R).
So, instead of just creating a company that was built
for online gamers, Alex and Spencer decided to form
The Gamers Lounge; a place for gamers to interact and
play their favorite games. In April 2006, The Gamers
Lounge, located at 902 East Wooster Street, opened
its doors to the public.
Running a business has been a very educational experience
for both of the owners of The Gamers Lounge, and sometimes
a difficult one. Getting the initial inventory was
difficult, but eventually the business began running
smoothly.
Inside The Gamers Lounge , there is an entire wall
lined with computers designed solely for online gaming.
Players sit at the computers, complete with flat screen
monitors and headphones and immerse themselves into
their game. They can play alone, go online and play
other players across the world, or play against the
people sitting next to them in the lounge.
